Unveiling a Unusual Steam Demo: Playing as a Turdy Character in a Mission to Reach the Toilet
Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and players have found numerous entertaining creations from small studios. But, one stands out for its offbeat concept. Titled Unko Technica, this classic-feel platformer lets you play a character that is actually a piece of poop attempting to navigate to a commode. In case you're wondering, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."
Player controls is simple: you only need a single jump button. Throughout 150 stages, you'll face tough enemies and access a store to purchase customizations for your poop character.
Plan your actions precisely, since one mistake means starting over. Bounce on bubbles to hurl the poop upward, navigate disappearing platforms, and interact with switches to unlock hidden paths. Collect currency for buying challenging levels where gameplay ramps up.
Visually, the game shows off eye-catching stages and catchy music score. The simple visual style of shifting basic polygons may remind fans of old favorites like Earthbound.
While it's hard to name similar titles where you are a piece of feces, gaming have long featured scatological themes. For example, in Death Stranding, players create grenades from protagonist excrement. Titles such as Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved use feces as plant food. Unsurprisingly, this theme shows up extensively in Obsidian's South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.
Despite its goofy premise, Unko Technica has already received impressive accolades, such as taking top honors at a major publisher's game competition in 2023. A playable preview is accessible currently on Steam, with the final release set to debut on Steam this November.
