UN:Me: An Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has captured the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four distinct personas, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can take over spontaneously, releasing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.

Based on showcased footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are unique to every individual."

The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

At first glance, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, since every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already eliminated the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
