The Reze Arc Movie Dominates Domestic Box Office in Debut Weekend
Has Sony achieved another hit? In the wake of the success of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which brought in in excess of $600 million globally, the latest Chainsaw Man film has reached beyond the $100M mark internationally, hitting a global total of $108M this weekend. This feature outperformed Black Phone 2 ($12.9M) in its second week in cinemas, as well as the film Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere featuring Jeremy Allen White (nine million dollars).
Impressive American and Global Results
Helmed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a straightforward follow-up of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It brought in $18.2M in North America after a robust five-point-two-million-dollar Saturday earnings and $4.5M Sunday performance. Internationally, the MAPPA-produced film added $14.7M across 46 Sony markets, bringing its global earnings to over $60 million under Sony ($43.1 million abroad, $18.2M stateside). The studio has not yet revealed its complete box office tally.
Benchmarks to Previous Anime Hits
Promotional firm White Box Entertainment had earlier commented, comparing the movie's expected results to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the domestic market in the year 2022 and started with a comparable $18M in the U.S.. This movie's opening frame matches that standard, while its $108M global gross is now positioned just behind that movie's $166.6 million total earnings. While it is improbable this Chainsaw Man film will match the numbers of mega hit Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, it remains a significant success for the studio.
Marketing Efforts Boost Box Office Dominance
Along with its affiliate Crunchyroll have skillfully used fan engagement to propel their dominance at the anime box office. The Reze Arc advertising push kicked off at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in July with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, then continued with a significant involvement at New York Comic Con featuring exclusive clips, fan raffles, and more MAPPA sessions. Additionally, there was an private showing for enthusiasts for the public and popular figures too after the concluding day of the convention.
What’s Next
2025 is a major time for anime, and for the studio, which has an additional animated movie releasing in the coming months in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in late this year.
