The Contents of the Briefcase Henry Opens in the Hit Series?

Throughout a large portion of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison constructed from the past of Vecna. The search for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that potentially carries the secret to his downfall once and for all.

Spoiler Warning: This discussion reveals crucial plot points for the second part of the final season.

A Journey Into the Cavern

After locating Max in the world known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is hiding out in a cave that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. The answer is affirmative, but the event wasn't just a defensive killing.

Like many elements in volume 2, the significance of the mine shaft incident is detailed in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

The Philadelphia Experiment and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. One of his scientists took experimental components to sell to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about his research, the case most likely held vials of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon contact with the blood, causing the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the container could have held strange particles that was destined to travel to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the entity in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he controls the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a showdown between him and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to gain strength.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
