Students Share Concerns That AI Is Weakening Their Study Skills, Investigation Shows
According to recent investigation, pupils are sharing worries that using machine intelligence is negatively impacting their ability to engage academically. Many state it renders schoolwork “effortless”, while some claim it hinders their innovative capacity and prevents them from learning fresh abilities.
Widespread Usage of AI Among Pupils
A report examining the usage of AI in United Kingdom educational institutions found that just 2% of pupils aged 13 and 18 stated they did not use AI for their schoolwork, while 80% said they consistently used it.
Unfavorable Influence on Competencies
Despite AI’s popularity, 62% of the pupils reported it has had a negative impact on their abilities and development at school. 25% of the students agreed that artificial intelligence “enables me to obtain answers with minimal personal effort”.
A further 12% said artificial intelligence “limits my creative thinking”, while equivalent percentages stated they were less prone to solve problems or produce innovative text.

An expert in generative AI noted that the study was a pioneering effort to analyze how young people in the United Kingdom were incorporating artificial intelligence into their learning.
“The thing I find fascinating is how sophisticated the answers are,” the expert said. “When a majority of pupils voice concerns that AI fosters replication instead of independent work, it reflects a mature comprehension of educational goals and the technology’s potential risks and rewards.”
The professional added: “Young people who are using this technology actually have a pretty sophisticated, quite mature understanding of what the technology does in relation to their schoolwork, which is fascinating because we don’t give young people enough credit when it comes to using technology in an educational space, unaided, in this way.”

These results are consistent with scientific studies on the usage of artificial intelligence in learning. A particular analysis assessed brain electrical activity during written assignments among students using AI models and concluded: “The outcomes highlight worries regarding the enduring academic consequences of dependency on AI and emphasize the necessity for further exploration of its educational impact.”
Nearly half of the 2,000 pupils questioned expressed they were concerned their classmates were “surreptitiously utilizing AI” for academic work without their educators being able to identify it.

Numerous respondents stated that they wanted more guidance from educators for the appropriate usage of artificial intelligence and in judging whether its responses was trustworthy. An initiative aimed at assisting instructors with AI education is being launched.

Merely 31% indicated they didn’t think AI use had a unfavorable influence on any of their competencies. But, most of pupils said using artificial intelligence aided them acquire fresh abilities, for instance 18% who reported it assisted them comprehend issues, and 15% who said it assisted them generate “original and superior” ideas.

Upon further inquiry, a 15-year-old female student said: “My comprehension of mathematics has improved, and AI assists me in tackling complex problems.”
Meanwhile, a boy aged 14 said: “I now think faster than I used to.”
