Student Society Future Leader Ousted Following Conservative Activist Posts
The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his disputed online comments about Charlie Kirk.
The vote against the student leader achieved the necessary super-majority to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.
Disputed Comments
The dispute began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a university in Utah.
According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with other members seeming to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion was conducted over the weekend, with results announced on this week.
Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.
The announcement stated that the president-elect was deemed to have resigned in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Procedural Disputes
Voting operations were temporarily halted early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a statement, the student asserted that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement unequivocally denied that any representative acting for the student had participated in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.
His comment added that George was "proud and thankful to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has chosen ideology over integrity".
External Reactions
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The letter accused the society of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a political opponent".
The communication indicated that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had previously criticized Mr Abaraonye's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the society in spring.
