Shoaib Bashir Earns Surprise Selection in England's Ashes Squad

The English team has opted for a twelve-player squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise place.

Bashir's inclusion indicates that the visiting team will delay until the day of the initial match to decide whether the venue conditions suit four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.

Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are part of the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about either pace bowler’s condition.

The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse expected to miss out if Bashir enters the starting XI.

Ground Conditions Favor Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted five previous Tests.

During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.

Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners combined have just a handful.

On a ground known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, stated that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the more likely choice.

Alternative Choices Weighed

There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the team to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.

But McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.

Earlier, Nathan Lyon described Bashir as “OK,” adding that “in my eyes, Jack Leach is still England’s best spinner.”

“It is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for bowlers who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” he remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.

“I won't let my secrets out so they perform and perform well out here.”
