Reported Plan to Attack Belgian PM Thwarted
Belgium's police have arrested three suspects allegedly involved in plotting an attack on the government's premier, Bart de Wever.
Prosecutors labeled the suspected scheme as a "jihadist-inspired terrorist attack" targeting the PM and additional elected representatives.
During raids conducted in the Deurne area of Antwerp, in proximity to the prime minister's home, authorities uncovered a suspected improvised explosive device and proof that the individuals were preparing to deploy a drone.
While the planned victims of the strike were not officially named by the legal authorities, Vice Premier Maxime Prevot revealed that Belgium's leader was included in the targets.
"Reports of a premeditated assault directed toward Premier Bart de Wever is profoundly disturbing," Prevot declared in a update on online platforms on the investigation day.
"It highlights that we are confronting a serious extremist danger and that we have to remain vigilant," he concluded.
The three people detained on allegations of plotting a terrorist killing and participation in the functions of a extremist organization all live in the city of Antwerp, per the federal prosecutors. They were had birth years in three different years between 2001 and 2007.
On the evening of the arrests, one of the individuals was let go, while the other suspects were under interrogation and scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
Legal authorities said that the suspects were arrested after a court official ordered searches of their homes in the city by officials supported by explosive sniffer dogs.
Throughout these raids that they found a device which "bore strong resemblances to an improvised explosive device", legal representative Ann Fransen stated at a news conference on the day of the events.
Investigations also uncovered a collection of ball bearings and a three-dimensional printer, with "indications that they intended to use a drone to attach a payload", she continued.
Fransen said that there had been 80 extremist probes opened in Belgium so far this year - more than the full amount of investigations in last year.
Earlier this year, five suspects were found guilty for a 2023 plot to strike Belgium's leader while he was serving as the mayor of Antwerp.
