Prison Shock: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He battled the law and justice triumphed.

Sixty days after being handed a 27-year sentence for trying to “annihilate” the nation's democratic institutions, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro at last appears destined for incarceration.

Imminent Jailing

The found-guilty instigator – who's been under house arrest in his mansion while a number of court processes and challenges unfold – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the coming days, amid increasing rumors that he will be sent to a well-known high-security prison.

Historical Remarks on Inmates

During Bolsonaro’s 40-year political career, the conservative ex- paratrooper exhibited minimal compassion for the country's prison population.

“What’s the need to offer those scoundrels a good life?” he once mused. “They deserve to be fucked, full-fucking-stop. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Should you not wish to wind up behind bars, the only thing required is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or theft.”

Prison Destination Discussion

Yet the idea of Bolsonaro himself landing in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, a group of four this week inspected the prison in an seeming bid to prevent the judiciary from sending him there.

The senator, a senator from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was part of that quartet, said he anticipated the elderly leader to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious digestive issues – the outcome of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – signified it would be hazardous to keep the ex-leader there. “His [health] situation is extremely serious. He cannot to manage if they send him to Papuda … It would be dreadful,” he added, who also worried about cramped cells and the quality of jail cuisine.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells containing 40 detainees: “That is practically one square metre per inmate.

“We conversed to the prisoners and they complain, of course, of the horrible meals,” remarked the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

He is not the lone figure expressing views before the former president’s anticipated imprisonment.

Writing in a prominent publication, another ally, the ex- communications minister Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” conclusion to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and claimed Brazil was about to experience “the biggest political injustice in its record”.

“This is an unfairness that eats away the spirits of many Brazilian citizens,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Opinion

This could be accurate given the considerable support Bolsonaro retains on the right-wing. Yet his anticipated jailing has also gladdened the feelings of many individuals who think he deserves to be incarcerated for plotting to prevent his successor from becoming president – and also plotting to have him killed.

The lawmaker, a representative for the sitting leader's Workers’ party, commented: “No one wants Bolsonaro to be sent in a dark cell. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be put in segregation. No one desires Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get proper care – but respectful handling in prison. He cannot persist being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have long praising the tough treatment of prisoners, had abruptly realized to their privileges. “Recently has the far-right – which has repeatedly claimed that human rights should not be for lawbreakers – decided to inspect a prison to find out what conditions are really like,” he remarked.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “degrading, insulting treatment”.

Possible Prison Facilities

Despite rumors that Bolsonaro could be sent to Papuda, which presently contains about fourteen thousand prisoners, his more likely location appears to be a nearby penitentiary for law enforcement and other “unique” inmates called Papudinha (Small Papuda).

The accommodations are far more comfortable than those in the larger jail, although still a world away from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the impressive official residence, about 12 miles away.

As per sources, the room Bolsonaro could expect to inhabit in Papudinha is about 24 square meters – approximately the size of vehicle spaces – and features a 12 square meter restroom with a water facility and a 130 square foot balcony. “He could be allowed to have a TV and additionally a small fridge in his room as long as they were provided by his relatives,” sources suggested.

Ideological Responses

Senator Lucas condemned the rumoured proposal to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the judicial authority who led Bolsonaro’s proceedings and will decide his fate in the {
