More than 250 individuals have been arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of continuing federal border security operations, according to official sources.

Widening Federal Actions

Charlotte represents the newest American city to experience strengthened federal involvement, following similar measures in major metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles earlier this year. Federal authorities have stated that those apprehended include criminal elements and street gang participants.

Local Resistance

Nonetheless, elected officials and citizens have strongly criticized the apprehensions, which federal authorities have designated "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's chief executive has claimed that individuals are being selected based on their racial background.

"We've seen masked, well-armed officers in military-style attire driving unmarked vehicles, focusing on American citizens based on their physical characteristics, practicing racial discrimination and arresting arbitrary people in parking areas," stated the chief executive. "This strategy is not strengthening our safety."

In a recently issued announcement, a federal representative asserted that the campaign has resulted in the arrest of "among the most hazardous criminal undocumented individuals", comprising gang members.

Further individuals taken into custody had been previously convicted for diverse crimes, including assault on law enforcement officers, DWI offenses, theft and manipulating government records, according to the agency.
