Democrats Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a contingent of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a disputed video.

The Recording That Triggered the Controversy

The clip, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic lawmakers who previously served in defense or intelligence roles.

"Like us, you all took an oath to safeguard and support this constitution," the lawmakers stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our governing document aren't just from overseas, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can reject improper directives, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to execute directives that break the statutes or our constitution."

The Former President's Angry Reply

The video message seemed to trigger a heated reaction from the former president.

On later in the week, Trump wrote on his preferred platform: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In another publication, he wrote: "This is really serious, and Harmful to our Nation. Their words cannot be allowed to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a additional publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Opposition Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Top Democrats issued a joint declaration denouncing the comments.

"Partisan aggression has no position in America," they wrote. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all served our country with tremendous loyalty and honor. We clearly condemn Donald Trump's appalling and harmful calls for execution against elected officials, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to guarantee the security of these officials and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme digital publications and recant his aggressive discourse before he causes harm," the statement continued.

Lawmakers' Firm Reaction

The lawmakers who were featured in the video also released a response.

"We identify as former service members and security experts who care for this United States and made an vow to protect and defend the founding document of the United States," they said. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we aim to keep it. No intimidation, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that sacred responsibility."

"The most revealing aspect is that the ex-president deems it liable to punishment by death for us to repeat the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should know that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and obligation to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "Every American must unite and censure the president's calls for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a period for principled stance."

Further Partisan Comments

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's comments and published on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, all citizens – without partisan consideration – should censure this immediately and absolutely."

The Conservative official defended Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of Congress instructing military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is historic in American history."

The GOP official also according to sources told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's publications, Trump was "describing the violation of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the wording and establish all that."

Executive Branch Statement

During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a media member, "Would the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."

"We should understand about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official declared. "You have sitting members of the US Congress who coordinated to arrange a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to current military personnel advising them to ignore the commander in chief's lawful orders."

She stated: "The integrity of our armed forces depends on the hierarchy, and if that structure is violated, it can lead to people getting killed, it can lead to chaos, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
