China's Figure Skaters Under Investigation Following Displaying Prop Weapon during Competition

The International Skating Union have launched an investigation after a pair of Chinese figure skaters appeared with what looked like a replica weapon during a grand prix figure skating event.

Broadcast footage captured the skaters sitting with a large toy shaped like a rocket labeled “DF-61” while waiting for their scores at the “kiss and cry” area during the event.

The DF-61 is a recently introduced Chinese-made land-based intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying nuclear weapons, which was unveiled at a military parade last month.

Officials is aware that an inappropriate plush item seems to have been among those tossed onto the rink by audience members after a routine during the competition,” the organization commented in an emailed statement.

“The soft toy was then held by the athletes after their performance. The ISU regrets the incident and will investigate further.”

The duo finished in eighth place of 10 pairs in the ice dance event, which was won by Madison Chock and Evan Bates of the United States.
